Harold "Harry" C. Schmitt, 83, of Watkins, died Thursday, Feb. 20, 2014, at his family's home. Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 24, at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Norway, with the Rev. Craig Steimel officiating.
Burial: St. Patrick's and St. Paul's Cemetery, Watkins. Visitation: 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at St. Michael's Parish Center, with a rosary at 7 p.m.
Harry was born May 8, 1930, in Elgin, Neb., to Theodore and Frances Schmitt. On Oct. 4, 1950, he married Helen Werning in Elgin.
Surviving are his children, Kathy (Bob) Zobeck, Gary (Sheila) Schmitt, Suzanne (Steve) Hiatt, Rick (Kerry) Schmitt, Diane (Steve) Bauer and Linda (Andy) Faucher, 24 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; sisters, Helen Getta and Irene McAleer; and brother, Bill Schmitt.
Harry was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Helen; brothers, Norbert, Clarence, Robert and infant Leonard; and sister, Wilma Vanourney.
He enjoyed all kinds of sports: baseball, basketball, golf, horseshoes, bowling and many board and card games.
Harry was everyone's handyman. He could repair any household item as well as creating many different crafts. He always had a joke for the party.
