Owen, Gertrude
Gertrude Owen, 96, of Iowa City, died Monday, Dec. 28, 2009, at Mercy Iowa City following a brief illness. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, Iowa City, with burial to follow at Oakland Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the charity of the donor's choice.
Gertrude was born Aug. 30, 1913, in Iowa City, the daughter of John and Theresa Bream Miller. She was a graduate of City High School and Irish Business College. On July 5, 1947, Gertrude married Franklin Owen. Gertrude was employed for over 44 years with Northwestern Bell, retiring in 1977. She was a member of First Baptist Church and Telephone Pioneers of America.
Survivors include her stepson, Frank “Skip” (Vicki) Owen of San Diego, Calif.; her nieces, Loretta Patterson and Lorna Negus, both of Iowa City; her nephew, John Anderson of Richardson, Texas; and numerous great- and great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.
Gertrude was preceded in death by her husband in 1971; and her siblings, Dorothy Dreyer, Marguerite Anderson, Loretta Hurlbut and Theodore Miller.
