Fighting Parkinson’s with boxing

There was an article on Sunday, Jan. 5, about a Rock Steady boxing program in Sioux City. There is one in Iowa City at ICOR Boxing as well. My husband joined almost a year ago and I have gone with him as his 'corner man.” As a family nurse practitioner, I have been very impressed how many of the problems that go with Parkinson's Rock Steady works on. This includes balance, speed, facial expression, voice problems, falling and getting up, core strength, endurance and coordination. The coach, Emily Klinefelter, adapts the program as needed. Everybody has their own strengths and their own problems. I think that some people might feel too embarrassed to try it. I can assure them they will find a home here. Research says that aerobic exercise can really help with Parkinson's. This is a fun way to get it. The group is wonderful and supports each other. As a clinician and a spouse I would strongly encourage anyone with Parkinson's disease to give Rock Steady a try.
