John "Jack" Byrne, 76, of Cedar Rapids passed away Monday, Oct. 10, 2016, at Mercy Medical Center surrounded by his loving family.
A funeral Mass, officiated by the Rev. John R. Flaherty, will be held on Monday, Oct. 17, at All Saints Catholic Church at 10 a.m., with a visitation an hour beforehand. Visitation will be held on Sunday, Oct. 16, from 2 to 5 p.m. at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home, with a rosary service held at 4 p.m. Burial will follow the Mass at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Cedar Rapids.
Jack was born Jan. 6, 1940, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to Paul and Mildred Byrne. He was a graduate of Immaculate Conception High School and played on the basketball team for Bob Jennings. In 1963, Jack graduated from the University of Iowa. Jack was united in marriage to Sharon Fosdick on June 24, 1961. He retired in 2010 after a fulfilling and satisfying career in sales and sales management in the aggregate industry.
Following retirement his favorite pastime was attending his grandchildren's school and sporting events. Jack also enjoyed his weekly golf and lunch outings with "The Boys," who were his lifelong friends. Above all else, he loved being surrounded by his family.
Jack's faith was very important to him. He attended weekly adoration with his friend, Jesus.
Jack is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Sharon; their children, Lisa (John) Ogden, Rick (Sarah) Byrne, Beth (Kurt) Muller, Laurie (Pat) Robinson, Jamie (Robin) Byrne and Katie (Bill) Barnes; siblings, Tom (Gloria) Byrne, Carol (Ken) Goodman, Jerry (Teresa) Byrne, Rick (Kathy) Byrne, Dave (Karen) Byrne and Frank Byrne; 18 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Mick Byrne; and sister, Barb Eckard.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to All Saints Catholic Church or the Restoration Fund at Immaculate Conception Church in Cedar Rapids.
