Wallace, Louis 'Louie' Joseph
Louis “Louie” Joseph Wallace, 89, died Friday, Oct. 7, 2011, at Virginia Gay Nursing & Rehab in Vinton following an extended illness. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Vinton, with Pastor Mark C. Urlaub officiating. Interment will be held at Bear Creek Cemetery, north of Vinton. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Phillips Funeral Home in Keystone.
Louis was born Jan. 19, 1922, in Vinton, to Sherman Earl and Laura (Remington) Wallace. He graduated in 1940 from Lincoln High School in Vinton. On Sept. 8, 1943, he married Dorothy Ann Niebes. They spent most of their lives in Benton County, where they farmed in Vinton, Garrison, Keystone and Van Horne for 45 years. Louis raised seed corn for Vinton Hybrids, Funk Brothers Seed Co., and Pioneer Hybrids over the course of these years. The couple raised three children, Bonnie, Steve and Denny. In 1988, they retired and moved to Bella Vista, Ark., living there for 14 years until the death of Dorothy in 2001. Louis then returned to his roots in Vinton.
He served on the Keystone school board for several years. During his service, he was instrumental in consolidating the schools of Keystone, Van Horne, Blairstown and Newhall into the Benton Community School System in 1965. He was also active in the Benton County Farm Bureau, Benton County 4-H and Extension Services. Louis was an active member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Vinton.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy; his parents; his sister, Helen Johnson of Chicago; and two brothers, Harold and Virgil, both of Vinton.
Louis is survived by his daughter, Bonnie (Richard) Ealyof Wadena, Minn.; his sons, Stephen (Linda) Wallace of Vinton and Dennis (Susan) Wallace of Minneapolis; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and another to be born in April 2012; and his sister, Emma Edwards of Vinton.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
