Dane Michael Schussler, 21, died unexpectedly on Monday, Nov. 9, 2015, in Ames. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Marion. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Marion.
Dane is survived by his parents; brother, Eric; sister, Maria; grandfather, Gordon MacVey; grandmother, Arlene Schussler; aunts, Kay (Jim) Miller, Lori (John) Merrigan, Patrice (Dan) Rodabaugh and Deb (Don) Jackson; uncles, Lyle (Grace) MacVey and Dick (Kathy) Kiekhaefer; and numerous cousins.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Gregory Schussler; his grandmother, Dona MacVey; and his cousin, Jarrett MacVey.
Dane was born on Oct. 15, 1994, at Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of Jeff and Kathy Schussler. During his short life, he enjoyed growing up and getting his education in Ohio, California, and most recently here in Iowa. Dane graduated from Linn-Mar High School in Marion, in 2013. While at Linn-Mar, he was active in marching band, symphonies and jazz band. He excelled in academics and was particularly talented in math.
He worked for many summers for DuPont Pioneer in Marion where he enjoyed all the activities of corn breeding in the field. He continued his education at Iowa State University where he was a junior, majoring in industrial engineering. Dane completed an internship in industrial engineering in the summer of 2015 at Rockwell Collins in Cedar Rapids. He also enjoyed traveling around the country participating in Pokemon competitive card tournaments. Dane was kind, considerate and a wonderful friend to many. He was greatly loved by his family and his boundless energy and bright smile will be greatly missed.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family in Dane's honor.
