Dr. Monzer Mohammed Abu-Yousef, 72, passed away with his most loved ones by his side, the morning of Dec. 14, 2018.
Monzer was born in Jerusalem, Palestine, Feb. 5, 1946, the eldest of six siblings, to Mohammed and Haqmat Abu-Yousef. He grew up in a small town near Hebron among olive trees, figs and grape vines. He moved on to Cairo, Egypt, to attend medical school where he met his wife and together they moved to Beirut, Lebanon, for a short time before settling for the remainder of their lives in Iowa City, Iowa.
He was a professor of radiology at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, where he dedicated his life and passion for teaching over the last 43 years. He was a pioneer in the specialty of Ultrasound, published countless articles and received innumerable awards for both his individual achievements and his dedication to teaching. He was not only loved and respected by his family but also by his colleagues, residents, the community of Iowa City and all those he interacted with.
He is survived by his wife, Farida; children, Dina and Ramy; brother, Maher; sister, Majida, Taghreed and Raida; and granddaughters, Maya, Mira and Taleen.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mohammed AbuYousef and Haqmat AbuYousef.
Monzer was laid to rest in the Islamic burial grounds at the Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids on Saturday, Dec. 15, 2018. The family will have a service on Saturday, Dec. 29, at 1 p.m. at the Hilton Hotel Grand Ballroom in Iowa City for family, friends, colleagues and anyone whose lives he touched to celebrate his legacy, his amazing contributions and our wonderful memories of him.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Mother Mosque of America or the National Kidney Foundation.
