Marvin James Shanda, 77, formerly of Belle Plaine and Cedar Rapids, passed away Tuesday, June 13, 2017, at his home in West Des Moines.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 17, at Hrabak-Neuhaus Funeral Service in Belle Plaine. Burial will take place at National Cemetery in Vining. Visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, June 16, at Hrabak-Neuhaus Funeral Service and will continue one hour before the service on Saturday.
Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Marvin was born Dec. 29, 1939, to Elmer and Ella (Sokol) Shanda in La Porte City, Iowa. He graduated from Belle Plaine High School in 1958. Following high school, Marvin went to work for Collins Radio in Cedar Rapids, now known as Rockwell Collins, until retirement in 1996. On June 4, 1961, Marvin married Pearl Metcalf in Tama, where he was a member of Gospel Center Church. Together they lived in Cedar Rapids, where they raised their children.
Marvin enjoyed woodworking, fishing and visiting old Pioneer cemeteries. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, whether it was teaching them to fish or them teaching him new computer skills and baking for him.
Marvin is survived by his wife, Pearl of West Des Moines; children, Kelly Suarez of Cedar Rapids, Douglas (Heide) Shanda of Houston, Texas, and Daniel (Jennifer) Shanda of West Des Moines; sister, Marlene Stutzman of Marion; grandchildren, James Montgomery, Lauren Shanda and Sarah Shanda; and great-grandchildren, Robert Montgomery and Hailey, Selena, Briella and Paisley Lein.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Wayne Shanda; and sister, Margery Harapat.
