Haberkorn, Gary Joseph
Gary Joseph Haberkorn, 56, of Marion, died Sunday, Oct. 30, 2011, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha, following a long battle with cancer. Funeral Service: 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 3, at New Covenant Bible Church in Cedar Rapids, by Pastor Kim Pagel. Family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion. Private family burial: Oak Shade Cemetery, Marion.
Survivors include his wife, Deb; three sons, Matt (Sheri) Haberkorn of Phoenix, Ariz., Todd (Val) Haberkorn of St. Louis, Mo., and Eric Haberkorn, a student at the University of Iowa; four grandchildren, Isaac, Anna, John and Mark; his parents, Vern and Rose Haberkorn of Marion; and siblings, Rita Currer of Kent, Wash., Tom Haberkorn of York, Pa., Dennis Haberkorn of Louisville, Colo., Sheri Markham of Sudan, Texas, Mark Haberkorn of Grand Junction, Colo., and Rick Haberkorn of Springfield, Ill.
Gary was born March 13, 1955, in Dubuque, Iowa, the son of Vernon and Rose (Brimeyer) Haberkorn. He graduated from Mount Mercy College. On May 1, 1976, Gary was united in marriage to Debra Rasmussen in Decorah, Iowa. He worked at Rockwell Collins for 35 years, retiring in April of 2010, as director of Technical Operations. Gary loved spending time with family, especially his grandchildren. He enjoyed bird watching, nature and time outdoors. Gary was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, son and employee. He devoted the latter part of his life to Christ and his church family.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Gary's memory.
