Sluiter, James Grant
James Grant Sluiter, 72, formerly of Marion, recently of Peoria, Ariz., passed into the presence of the Lord on Sept. 25, 2012, at his residence. Public Visitation: 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Oct. 1, at Cedar Falls Gospel Hall, Cedar Falls. Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Jim was born to Grant and Alberta Sluiter in New Hartford, Iowa on Sept. 9, 1940. He was born again on Dec. 7, 1959. Jim earned a degree in agriculture from Iowa State University and a degree in medical technology from Michigan State University. Most of his career was at Schoitz Hospital/Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo, Iowa. He retired in 2005.
Jim was a very active person who enjoyed hiking, tennis, biking and traveling. He was active and faithful in the assembly of Christians meeting at the Gospel Hall wherever he lived.
Jim married Janice Brandt from Garnavillo in 1963. They lived their lives in Iowa and Michigan. Jan passed away in 2005. Jim remarried in 2007 to Kelly Shadbolt in Phoenix, Ariz. In 2009, they moved to Peoria, Ariz.
In 2009, Jim was diagnosed with Progressive Spinal Muscle Atrophy, an ALS subtype.
Jim is survived by his wife, Kelly; his daughter, Heidi (Steve) McCandless of Burks Falls, Ontario; son, Shad (Cynthia) of Postville; sister, Juliana (Gene) Snyder of Dike; brother, Alvin of Omaha, Neb.; and grandchildren, Brittany and Ian McCandless and Cameron and Christy Sluiter.
