Schafbuch, Larry Neil

Larry Neil Schafbuch, 71, of Ladora, died Aug. 7, 2009, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, at the New Covenant Parish of the United Methodist Church in Victor. Burial will be in Smith Cemetery, south of Victor.

Larry was born Sept. 1, 1937, on the family farm south of Victor, the son of Clark and Pearl Mohr Schafbuch. He was raised on the farm and was a 1955 graduate of Victor High School. Following his education he farmed and served with the Iowa National Guard for 6 1/2 years as a sergeant with the 224th Engineer Battalion.

On Sept. 8, 1962, he was married to Marilyn Rae Dicus, at Kenwood Park Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids. He was a lifelong farmer on the family century farm. He was a member of the New Covenant Parish United Methodist Church where he served as a trustee.

Larry liked to invent and make improvements on farm equipment, which included receiving a patent on a field rototiller. He held a passion for classic cars especially his 1961 Corvette. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, family camping vacations, and particularly enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He loved to square dance and was a member of the Victor Star Twirlers Club.

Survivors include his wife, Marilyn of Ladora; four children, Linda (Al) Gerard of Marengo, Darrell (Tracy) Schafbuch of Victor, Connie (Dave) Miner of Dysart, and Kevin (Tina) Schafbuch of Ladora; and 14 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, LaDean and her husband, Howard Webb; and a brother and sister in infancy.
