James Donald Jenkins, 60, of Cedar Rapids, died Friday, Sept. 1, 2017, at Manor Care Center in Cedar Rapids. Services: 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, at New Covenant Bible Church in Robins. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at New Covenant Bible Church from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Saturday, prior to the service.
Survivors include his wife, Romeyn (Sloan) Jenkins; his son, Jonathan (Julianna) Jenkins of Greeley, Colo.; and a sister, Mary Ann (Steve) Gensicke of Cedar Rapids. He is also survived by 11 nieces and nephews and one grandniece.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Jim was born Oct. 18, 1956, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of Donald and Hazel (Nichols) Jenkins. Jim was a lifelong Cedar Rapids resident. He received a bachelor of music degree from the University of Iowa in 1980, with a piano performance major and a music education minor. He married Romeyn B. Sloan on June 13, 1987, at Cedar Heights Baptist Church in Cedar Falls.
Jim was a music teacher in the Cedar Rapids school district and Isaac Newton Christian Academy. He was the organist for New Covenant Bible Church for 29 years. He also taught many private music students on many instruments, including piano, cello, clarinet, bagpipes and voice. He was a member of the University of Iowa Scottish Highlanders while in college and was active in several other piping bands as an adult. He was active with the Hawkeye Area Grand Gaelic Isle Society (HAGGIS). He sang with the Cedar Rapids Concert Chorale and Chorale Midwest.
