Petersen, Leo S.
Leo S. Petersen, 73, of Strawberry Point, died Tuesday, March 1, 2011, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha. Memorial services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 5, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion. Family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, with a Masonic service beginning at 7 p.m. Burial: Mount Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his wife, Valene; children, Leo (Kathy) Petersen and Brian (Christina) Petersen, both of Marion, Renae (Mitch) Barnhart of Strawberry Point, and Kenny Petersen of Cedar Rapids; 10 grandchildren, Jon and Matt (Deb) Hampshire, Michelle (Nick) Hoppenworth, Nicole, Cory, Kara, Colin, Alan and Roger Petersen, and Megan Barnhart; seven great-grandchildren, Hunter, Meridea, Jonathan, Adam, Dakota, Zander and Taiden; and siblings, Earl Mummert of Lake George, Colo., and Annette (Mark) Olsen of Cedar Rapids.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Roger; sisters, Lenore and Alice; and a brother, Charles.
Leo was born July 4, 1937, in Sioux City, Iowa, the son of Leo and Caroline (Coté) Petersen. In 1955, Leo graduated from Heelan Catholic High School in Sioux City. He married Valene Walsted on Dec. 30, 1957, in Sioux City. He ran his business Leo's Locke Shoppe in Cedar Rapids.
Leo's interests included old cars, archery, bowling, playing cards, going to the casino, bulldogs, and spending time with all of his grandchildren.
He was a member of Knights of Columbus 909, Kingston Masonic Lodge 676, Embassy Chefs, Director's staff, and the Iowa Locksmiths Association, where he served as treasurer for seven years.
