Dye, Melba Joy
Melba Joy Dye, 94, a resident of Meth-Wick Community, Cedar Rapids, died there Monday, Dec. 6, 2010. Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 11, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion, by Kay Mineck. The family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include her children, Lyla Bendsen of Oak Park, Ill., Marlene (Don) Washburn of Marion, Dan (Diana) Dye of Central City, and Lois Olsen of Vermillion, S.D.; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lyle; two brothers; and one grandson, Tod Washburn.
Melba was born Oct. 13, 1916, the daughter of Dan and Clara (Barnes) Hathaway, in Gross, Neb. She married Lyle E. Dye on August 31, 1935, in Clark, S.D. He died May 30, 1992. Melba was a longtime schoolteacher in the Marion and Cedar Rapids school systems. She was a graduate of Coe College, an active member of the Springville Presbyterian Church, ABWA, the Broken Bit Saddle Club and several other organizations. Melba was an avid card player and enjoyed crafts.
A memorial fund has been established in Melba's memory.
