To the editor:
In response to Leland Hutchison Sr.'s Nov. 12 letter '‘Chicago the Musical' not the best selection”:
Leland Hutchinson Sr. has expressed his concerns about Xavier High School's production of 'Chicago”and I can understand his concern. However, I think judging a school based on their musical choice is uncalled for.
I am a graduate of Xavier High School and I participated in many theater productions during my four years. I know past plays and musicals, such as 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest,” 'Legally Blonde” and 'Altar Boyz” had to be taken into consideration by faculty and staff before being decided upon. Some scenes might to be modified or taken out and lyrics might need to be changed.
Tom Keating is right when he says Xavier is 'developing the total person in a Catholic environment” because Xavier is not ignoring the fact that inappropriate behavior exists outside school. People attending the performance and seeing the musical title on their program know what to expect. If they do not want their children seeing references to drugs and strong language, it is the responsibility of the parent to monitor what their kids see, not the school. A musical or play is not condoning any of the inappropriate activity in the performance. Xavier has the right to decide and monitor what they perform in their department, regardless of content and their affiliation with the Catholic church.
