John P. Crilley, 83, passed away Sunday, March 20, 2016. A parish vigil service will be held at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 22, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Marion, followed by the family greeting friends from 5 to 7 p.m. A visitation will also be held from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 23, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Marion, followed by funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow at 1:30 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Castle Grove, with military honors provided by American Legion Post No. 298.
John is survived by his wife, Dorothy; son, Michael (Christine) Crilley of Cedar Rapids; and two granddaughters, Leah and Elle.
He was preceded in death by his parents and many aunts and uncles.
John was born March 15, 1933, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of Emmett and Elsie (Brislawn) Crilley. He graduated from Coggon High School. On June 20, 1956, John married Dorothy Vanourney in Central City, Iowa. He served in the U.S. Army following the Korean conflict. John worked for Pearson Wall Systems for 40 years, retiring in July 1995.
Before his illness, John loved trap shooting, building radio control airplanes, history and wood working. He was a member of the Cedar Rapids Sky Hawks, American Legion Post No. 298 and St. Joseph Catholic Church.
