Schirm, Ronald R.
Ronald R. Schirm, 78, of Cedar Rapids, died at home Wednesday, April 21, 2010. Memorial services: 10 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church by the Rev. Jonathan Offt, with military services. A visitation will be Monday at the church from 4 to 8 p.m. and after 9 a.m. Tuesday. Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Ron is survived by his wife, Donna Wray, of 58 years; children, Debra (Tony Oppegard) Schirm of Lexington, Ky., and Kevin (Becky) Schirm of Centreville, Va.; grandchildren, Sabra, Kelsey, Kendall, Ariana, Laura, Aaron and Ryan; sister, Marilyn (Gordon) Kerkman of Aurora, Ill.; and sister-in-law, Jan Schirm of Cedar Rapids.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Gary Schirm.
Ron was born Nov. 25, 1931, in Cedar Rapids, to Jim and Mildred Winn Schirm. He married Donna Wray Jones on April 26, 1951, in Hannibal, Mo. Ron graduated from Coe College and received a master's degree in education from the University of Iowa. He was an educator and coach in the Cedar Rapids School District for over 47 years, first at Wilson Junior High, then at Jefferson High School.
Ron was admitted to the Coe College Kohawk Athletic Hall of Fame, then the Iowa High School Assistant Football Coach Hall of Fame and recently inducted to the Jefferson Track Hall of Fame. Ron was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and an Army veteran during the Korean conflict.
