Services: 1 p.m. Wednesday at First Congregational Church, by the Rev. Bob David. Entombment: Cedar Memorial Park Mausoleum. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home on Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m.
Surviving, besides her husband, Dr. Robert A. Sedlacek, are a daughter, Debra (Dr. Bruce) Neumann of Glenwood Springs, Colo.; two sons, Dr. Scot (Dr. Joyce) Sedlacek of Golden, Colo., and their daughters, Bryn Sedlacek of Annapolis, Md., and Jordon Sedlacek of Fort Collins, Colo.; and Kurt (Cindy) Sedlacek of Salida, Colo.; one sister, Loretta Haddy of Cedar Rapids; and one brother, George T. Abodeely of Cedar Rapids.
She was born Aug. 22, 1928, in Worchester, Mass., to the Rev. Thomas and Ida Abodeely and was married to Dr. Robert A. Sedlacek on June 26, 1949, in Cedar Rapids. She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Alma Ellis, Ramza Sturgeon and Vivian Nemer; and a brother, Kenneth Abodeely.
A graduate of McKinley High School in 1946, she received her B.A. degree in music education from the University of Iowa in 1951. Her music career began when she received a four-year music scholarship to the University of Iowa. As a freshman music major, she was given the privilege of performing the soprano solo part in Haydn's Oratorio “Creation” with a 100-piece orchestra. After receiving her B.A. degree, she taught in a consolidated school for one year before retiring to raise a family.
During the years her children were in school, she performed many years for Beethoven Club, Cantata Singers, church choir, the Follies, Community Theatre productions and with the Dieman-Bennett Dance Theatre of the Hemispheres.
Teaching dance was a part-time career so she started taking modeling classes from Corrine Shover's Modeling School. That led to doing some modeling and then to some teaching of “Disco Modeling” and Photogenic Poses” for Corrine's classes. Corrine also got her started as a Mary Kay beauty consultant, which she enjoyed for more than 20 years.
Vickie was an accomplished choreographer and dance teacher, having taught “Disco Dancing” for five years and then “Jazz Aerobics” for the next five years. She worked as a secretary/receptionist at the Group Benefits Design Corporation with her husband. She was in sales with KOCR-TV Fox 28, Telecom USA, Teleconnect, and retired after 13 years as an account executive with WMT Radio in 2002.
Vickie was a volunteer and major fundraiser for many local organizations, including Professional Women's Network, Cedar Rapids Civic Ballet, first president of Dance Theatre Associates - the support group of Dieman-Bennett Dance Theatre of the Hemispheres, Zeta Phi Eta Drama sorority, Beethoven Club, St. Luke's and Mercy Medical Center Auxiliary, Cedar Rapids Symphony Women's Committee, Cedar Rapids-Marion Fine Arts Council and Paramount Theatre Restoration Project.
She was a member of First Congregational Church and choir, and Cedar Rapids Country Club.
In lieu of flowers, friends may, if they wish, make contributions to First Congregational Church Music Fund, 361 17th St. S.E, 52403 or Cottage Grove Place Foundation, 2115 First Ave. S. E. 52402, both in Cedar Rapids.
