Loretta Mary Haddy,
84, of Cedar Rapids, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2015, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13, at St. George Orthodox Church in Cedar Rapids. A Trisagion service will be at 7 p.m. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church. The Very Rev. Father Fred Shaheen will be officiating. Burial will follow at St. George Cemetery.
Loretta was born on July 22, 1931, to Father Thomas and Ida Abodeely. She was in the graduating class of 1949 at McKinley High School. She was married to Joe Haddy on March 11, 1956, at St. George Orthodox Church. They shared 47 years of memories together until his passing in October 2003. For many years Loretta along with Joe were the owners/operators of Tommy's Grocery and later the Thrifty Foods in Cedar Rapids. Family and friends were very important to Loretta for whom she enjoyed cooking Lebanese food. Loretta was a very actively involved member of St. George Church. She enjoyed singing in the choir, being the former choir director for many years and helping with the church's bake sales. She was also an avid Hawkeye football and basketball fan, as well as meeting monthly for lunch with the class of 1949.
Left to cherish Loretta's memory are her children, Bart (Deanna) Haddy of Cedar Rapids and Dr. Craig Haddy of Aurora, Ill.; brother, George Abodeely of Marion; a brother-in-law, Roger Haddy of Cedar Rapids; a granddaughter, Ashley Haddy of Aurora, Ill.; and many devoted nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Kenny Abodeely; and sisters, Alma Ellis, Ramza Sturgeon, Vivian Nemer and Vicky Sedleck.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. George Orthodox Church in Cedar Rapids or the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House in Hiawatha.
A special thank you to Dr. Melanie Stahlberg and the staff at Mercy Medical Center and Hospice House. Special thanks to nieces, Laurie Hepker and Fauzan Smith, for the overwhelming love and care they gave Aunt Loretta in her final days.
