SIGLINDE GAUPP
Coralville
Siglinde Anna Emilie Bernt Gaupp passed away Monday, Sept. 14, 2015, within hospice care in Mercy Iowa City.
Siglinde Bernt was born June 21, 1934, on a farm outside Marschau in the Sudetenland area of Germany, to Alfons and Fredericka (Ritt) Bernt. She was the oldest of three children (Reingard and Volker).
Siglinde survived the worldwide depression, World War II, Russian occupation and Communist rule to escape to West Germany. She later helped her parents and sibling also escape to the west zone. She married John M. Gaupp, an American soldier, on Aug. 10, 1957, in the Ulm Minster Roman Catholic Church in Ulm, West Germany. They had two children, Colleen and Dennis.
The first time Siglinde lived in the Iowa City area she worked at Mays Drugstore in the Wardway Plaza. She enjoyed the numerous customers and friends who shopped at Mays. The second time she lived in the Iowa City area she enjoyed her retirement with her family and friends.
Siglinde is survived by her daughter, Colleen (Bill) Jacobson; son, Dennis John Gaupp; granddaughters, Amanda and Ana Jacobson; sister, Reiny (Horst) Jordan; nephews, Norb (Kim) and Tom (Diane) Jordan; and five great-nephews and nieces, Nicholas, Patrick, Maggie, Max and Marielle.
Siglinde was preceded in death by her parents, brother, former husband and grandson, William A. Jacobson Jr.
A grave side service will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 20, at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City. The Rev. Colette Soults will officiate. A visitation will be held from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 20, at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, University Heights.
Online condolences may be sent for her family through the Web at www.gayandciha.com.
Memorials will be given to the University of Iowa Children's Hospital and Clinics in remembrance of her grandson, William, or you may direct them to a church or charity of your choosing.
