Iris Young, 83, died Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2017, at the Woodlands in Anamosa following a sudden illness.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 23, at First Congregational Church, Anamosa, where friends may call after 10 a.m. Pastor Mona Burns will officiate at the service. Goettsch Funeral Home, Anamosa, has been entrusted with the services.
Iris Maxine Porter was born May 17, 1934, in Iowa City, Iowa, the daughter of Harold and Nellie Porter. She was the sister of Opal and Doris and had a special cousin, Phyllis. Iris graduated from Anamosa High School, Class of 1951. She spent most of her life working with her husband on their family farm, but also worked a short time at the Collins Co. in Anamosa and then enjoyed 15 years with Home Interiors Corp. In her later years, she served as treasurer for First Congregational Church, where she and Harlin were longtime members.
After high school graduation, Iris married Garriet Harms. Garriet lost his life in the Korean conflict shortly after their marriage.
On May 18, 1952, Iris married Harlin E. Young at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Together they shared 56 years of marriage, always staying in the Anamosa area until Harlin passed away on July 16, 2008.
Iris is survived by two daughters, Loni (Bill) Heidbreder and Vona (Ken) Stelken; grandsons, Nathan Young, Cody, Casey and Cale Stelken, and Alex Heidbreder; great-grandchildren, Harley and Cory Stelken and Eian and Eryn Young; and her sister, Doris Husmann. She also dearly loved her nephew, Wayne Bohlken, and had many special friends, including her cat, Abigail.
Iris was preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Nellie Porter; her husband, Harlin Young; her son, Mark Young; her grandsons, Joel Stelken and Nicholas Young; and her sister, Opal Poock.
Iris will be missed by all who loved her, but now is at peace.
