McGrew, Alta
Alta McGrew, 105, of Springville, died Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2010, at Hallmark Care Center, Mount Vernon. Graveside memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 1, at Springville Cemetery. The Goettsch Funeral Home, Anamosa, is caring for Alta and her family. A luncheon and time of remembering will follow at the Springville Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Willis; a brother, Dale; and a sister, Hilda Armstrong.
Alta S. Stentz was born Nov. 14, 1904, in Linn County, Iowa, near Paralta. She was the daughter of George T. and Estella (Mann) Stentz. She graduated from the Springville High School in 1922 and then continued her education at Coe College in Cedar Rapids. She graduated from Coe in 1926, with a Bachelor of Science degree in home economics. Alta married Willis J. McGrew on Dec. 24, 1927, in Springville. He preceded her in death in April 1989. Alta had worked as a bookkeeper in Cedar Rapids and Springville. She worked last at the Springville Coop. She was always proud of being a graduate of Coe College.
