Garth Edward Cooney, 60, of Marengo, passed away Sunday, Jan. 21, 2018, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House in Hiawatha. Memorial services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Marengo, with Father David Wilkening officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery. There will be a luncheon and time to visit with the family at the church following the committal service at the cemetery. A memorial fund has been established. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo, is assisting the family with arrangements.
Garth is survived by his wife, Della of Marengo; three children, Chad (Kaylynn) Cooney of Madison, S.D., Jason (Kayla) Cooney of Manchester and Sara (Tim) Campagna of Marion; six grandchildren, Addison, Paislee, Nolan and Sam Cooney and Leighton and Weston Campagna; five siblings, Gary (Elaine) Cooney of Hudson, Mike (Jade) Cooney of Indianola, Frank (Debbie) Cooney of Solon, Tim (Janine) Cooney of Ottumwa and Jeannette Cooney of Johnston; a sister-in-law, Kristen Cooney; his mother-in-law, Sandy Brecht; and a brother-in-law, Ron (Michelle) Brecht.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Emmett; and his father-in-law, Ron Brecht Sr.
Garth Cooney was born Feb. 7, 1957, in Iowa City, the son of Joe and Lois Hoyle Cooney. He graduated from Iowa Valley High School in 1975. He was united in marriage to Della Brecht on Nov. 28, 1980, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Marengo. Garth worked at Gerdau in Wilton as a crane operator for 29 years. He enjoyed all sports, especially golf, fantasy sports and the Iowa Hawkeyes. Family was very important to Garth, and he loved spending time with them all. He also loved spending time with his two best buddies, his dogs, Cooper and Baily.
