Gary Daniel Fangman was born Dec. 29, 1954, at Peoples Memorial Hospital in Independence, Iowa, the son of Daniel and LuCean (Schmit) Fangman. His early elementary years of education were at the Monti Consolidated School and he graduated from high school with the East Buchanan class of 1973.
Gary was united in marriage to Sheila Dilts on March 26, 1977, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They resided in Texas for a short time before moving north of Independence, where they have lived since. Gary farmed in many areas of Buchanan County. After his wife, his greatest love in life was farming and taking great care of the land.
Gary enjoyed participating in many sports, such as volleyball, basketball, wallyball, and softball. Some of the numerous baseball teams that he played on include Monti, Wee Willey's, Craft Cochran, and Shagnasty's. A beautiful day on the water with his boat made many fond memories for his family and friends.
At the age of 58 years, Gary entered into his eternal rest on Friday, May 3, 2013, at the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence following a sudden illness.
Preceding him in death were his father, Daniel; his brother, Paul; and brother-in-law Dennie Rickels.
Survivors include his wife, Sheila of Independence; mother, LuCean of Masonville; 10 brothers and sisters, Marge (Bob) Bosco of Wheaton, Ill., Roger (Sue) Fangman of Rowley, Liz (Dave) Ster of Center Point, Barb (Dennie) Sullivan of Winthrop, Mark (Tina) Fangman of Independence, Deb (Nick) Crawford of Winthrop, Phil (Threasa) Fangman of Masonville, Doug Fangman of Masonville Cathy Banks of Masonville, and Greg (Christine) Fangman of Independence; 24 nieces and nephews; 14 great-nieces and great-nephews; and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 7, at St. Patrick's Church in Monti. Burial: St. Patrick's Cemetery, Monti. Sharon Bainbridge will be officiating and Teresa Horak and St. Patrick's Choir will be providing the music. Casketbearers will be Neal Mahoney, Larry Mahoney, Pat Mahoney, Gerald Fangman, Mike Fangman, David Fangman, Rick Fangman, Donny Fangman, Bill Offerman, and Kevin Offerman. Friends may call from 3 until 8 p.m. Monday at the Monti Community Center.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established at Bank Iowa for the East Buchanan FFA and the East Buchanan Athletic Fund.
Fawcett Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Winthrop is assisting the family with arrangements.
