Maier, Lester Walton
Lester Walton Maier, 81, passed away at his home in rural Alburnett on June 2, 2011. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, June 6, at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories, Cedar Rapids, with the Rev. Don Cope of Lafayette Salem Evangelical Church officiating. Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home, Cedar Rapids. Burial will take place at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
His family includes his wife, Virginia; his children: son Ken (Denise) and their children: Cliff (Deb) Maier and Cliff's children, Dalton, Victoria, Samantha and Alexandria (one great-grandson Christopher and great-granddaughter Cassandra preceded Lester in death); Jennette Maier, Abbey (Chris) Droz, Brandon Maier and Ryan Maier; daughter Carol (Steve) Reeder and their children: Scott (Amanda) Reeder and their daughter, Peyton; John (Amanda) Reeder and Laura Reeder; son Dave (Ginny) and his children, Annette Maier and Daniel Maier; and son Dean (Deb) (daughter-in-law Kathy and grandson Joseph Maier preceded Lester in death) and Dean's children, Andy (Petra) Maier and Phil Maier; and one sister, Eleanor (Richard) Taylor.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl W. and Mable Maier; and two sisters, Irma Stambaugh and Neva Mercer.
Lester was born July 7, 1929, in the family home in Alburnett which he resided in at the time of his death. He attended Iowa State University and returned to the family farm in 1949. He was united in marriage to Virginia Sadler on Feb. 12, 1950, in Cedar Rapids. He was a member of the Central City Creamery Board, Linn County Pork Producers, Linn County Republicans, Linn County Corn and Soybean Association, and a charter member of the Alburnett Lions Club. He was also a lifetime member of Lafayette Salem Evangelical Church, where he served as Sunday school superintendent, trustee and lay leader.
Lester enjoyed woodworking and time spent with family.
