Duane was born in Cedar Rapids on July 5, 1931. He attended Coe College, during which time he was drafted to serve in the Korean War. In 1953 he was joined in marriage to Patricia Barta at Camp Stewart, Georgia. He later finished his degree in accounting at the University of Iowa, and was employed by the Internal Revenue Service as an auditor for 33 years, retiring in 1986.
Duane and Pat enjoyed spending winters on South Padre Island, Texas, during the past 15 years. Walking the beach and surf fishing were among Duane's favorite activities, and, of course, feeding the gulls.
Duane had intense passion for all his endeavors ranging from hunting, fishing, archery and building remote control airplanes. His artistry with woodcarving, furniture-building and watercolors also gave him great pleasure. When not outdoors Duane was an avid reader and game player.
Memorials may be made to the Cedar Rapids Public Library or the Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy.
