Kathleen Ann Kayser Brummer, 69, of Shellsburg, died Friday, Oct. 18, 2013, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23, at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel (212 East Sixth St.) in Vinton, where a Memorial Service will begin at 7 p.m., with Father Ardel Barta as celebrant. Private family burial will be at a later date at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Walker.
A memorial fund has been established.
Kathleen was born May 24, 1944, to Harold and Lucille (Alberts) Kayser, in Walker. She graduated from Walker High School in 1962. On June 2, 1962, Kathleen was united in marriage to Leo Brummer in Cedar Rapids, The couple later divorced. Kathleen worked for many years as a cook at the Hiawatha Care Center and retired in 2008. Kathleen was an avid reader in her spare time.
She is survived by her daughter, Barb (Mark) Persons of Cedar Rapids; her two sons, Brian (Chris Relf) Brummer of Shellsburg and Brett Brummer, also of Shellsburg; her canine companion, Ginger; her very close friend, Marilyn Mier; her grandchildren, April and Stacy Schoonover, Nycole and Jackson Persons, Melissa (Kevin) Schueller, Dillon Brummer, Jeremy Brummer, Alina Armstrong, Andrew and Aliza Brummer; her two great-grandchildren, Aiden and Avery Schueller; and her brother, David (Bonny) Kayser of Walker.
Kathleen was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Jim Kayser.
