FATHER ERNEST J. ENGLER
Dubuque
Father Ernest J. Engler was born July 14, 1927. His parents were Laurine (Jaeger) Engler and Ralph W. Engler of Hopkinton. He attended Loras College, Dubuque, took his theological training at St. Paul Seminary, St. Paul, Minn., and was ordained by Archbishop Leo Binz at Christ the King Chapel, Loras College, on June 2, 1951. He spent most of his priesthood in the field of education.
He retired in 1994 and moved to Surprise, Ariz., where he assisted at Prince of Peace and St. Claire of Assisi churches. He returned to Dubuque in June 2012 because of his health and lived at Oak Park Place until he moved to Stonehill in November 2016.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Laurine; and older brother, Cyril.
He is survived by his younger brother, Clarence, a Maryknoll missionary who spent most of his life in Taiwan; sister-in-law, Joan; and nephews, Francis, Mark and Paul.
Father Ernest died Feb. 20, 2017. There will be a memorial Mass at Resurrection Church in Dubuque on May 19 at 10:30 a.m., with a reception to follow. Archbishop Michael Jackels will officiate, with the Rev. Ardel Barta as homilist. Burial will be in St. Paul's Cemetery, Worthington. Hoffmann Schneider Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Dubuque, is entrusted with arrangements.
