Several fewer ex-Hawkeyes in NFL this year

As of 7 p.m., Sunday, several fewer former Iowa Hawkeyes are in the NFL than there were at this time last season.

Several ex-Hawkeyes were placed on waivers Saturday, including some surprises. I thought receiver Marvin McNutt would stick with Miami's active roster. He was added to the Dolphins' practice squad Sunday. He spent most of the 2012 season as a rookie on the Philadelphia Eagles' practice squad before being added to the active roster late in the season.

I didn't see safety Tyler Sash getting cut by the New York Giants. But I don't think we've seen the last of him in pro ball.

Then there's tight end Tony Moeaki, a 3-year veteran. The Kansas City Chiefs cut him Saturday. Moeaki fractured a shoulder Saturday, just one more injury in a career with too many of them, dating back to his Iowa days.

Moeaki needs to clear waivers before the Chiefs can put him on their injured list.

Then there's cornerback Amari Spievey of the Detroit Lions, a third-round draft pick in 2010 just like Moeaki. Spievey started 15 games for the Lions two years ago when they went to the NFL playoffs. He had a season-ending concussion in midseason last year.

But how about Colin Cole working his way back into the league after two years away? How about undrafted free agent Matt Tobin of Worthington, Iowa, making the Eagles' roster?

Other ex-Iowa players who were are on NFL rosters at this time last year but aren't now include Nate Kaeding and Sean Considine, both of whom retired during the off-season.

Second-year cornerback Shaun Prater was claimed off waivers by the Philadelphia Eagles from the Cincinnati Bengals today.
