Anthony "Tony" Zaleski, 65, died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2014, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, following a long struggle with depression. The family will greet friends Friday, Oct. 3, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City. Family committal services will be at the Oakland Cemetery columbarium.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Bur Oak Land Trust, P.O. Box 2523, Iowa City, IA 52244-2523.
Tony was born Nov. 16, 1948, in Herkermer, N.Y., the son of Benjamin and Cecilia (Sobocinski) Zaleski. He received his bachelor's degree from Cortland College and his master's degree from the University of Illinois. Tony served in the U.S. Air Force from 1971 to 1973. On Dec. 30, 1978, Tony married Sue Chidster in Cham-paign, Ill.
Tony retired from the University of Iowa, where he conducted research in the Department of Micro-biology.
Tony was a member of the Bur Oak Land Trust, an organization that protects and conserves the natural areas for future generations. He was an avid photographer, biker and carpenter. Tony loved nature, the outdoors and spending time with Sue, their friends and his Labradors, Kiska and Kenai.
He will be greatly missed.
Survivors include his wife and best friend, Sue; his sister, Margaret (Kevin) McGlocklin of Elk, Wash.; his in-laws, Wayne (Marjorie) Chidster of Springfield, Ill.; and his many friends.
Tony was preceded in death by his parents.
