Paul Lumpa, 81, of Monticello, died Friday evening, March 7, 2014, at the Shady Rest Care Center, Cascade, with his family by his side. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 13, at the First Presbyterian Church. Interment, with military honors, will be in the Oakwood Cemetery, Monticello. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Goettsch Funeral Home, Monticello. The Rev. Al Polito will officiate at the services.

Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Phyllis; four children, Diane (Rob) Gesie, Sue (Jim) Coleman, David Lumpa and special friend Wendy Kauder, all of Monticello, and Carol Lumpa-Dunn, Ruskin, Fla.; and six grandchildren and families, Jason (Kelly) Dettbarn and family, Lauren, Kade and Owen, Dustin (Samantha) Lumpa and daughter, Mila, Jasmine (Andy) Norman and son Cody, Dillon (Amy) Heinsius, Taylor Gesie and Dallas Lumpa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Wayne and Bob; and a sister, Mabel Hobart.
Paul Sherman Lumpa was born May 24, 1932, at Iowa City, Iowa. He was the son of Fred and Alvina Neimeyer Lumpa. He graduated from City High School in Iowa City in 1950. Paul then worked construction in Cedar Rapids and Independence.
He served in the United States Army during the Korean War. Paul was stationed at Harmon Air Force Base in Newfoundland. Paul and Phyllis Cox were married April 19, 1953, at the First Presbyterian Church, Monticello.
Following his return from service, Paul worked at Monticello Implement for 16 years. In 1970, they opened Paul and Phyl's Family Store in Monticello. In 1973, he started C&L Dryer, a business he still operated at the time of his death. His motto was: "I Service What I Sell." In 1994, as a stock holder of Faroex LTD, in Gimli, Canada, he was elected as vice president of the company.
Family was important to Paul. He was a Little League coach, a Cub Scout and Boy Scout leader, a Rainbow Dad and a Demolay Dad. He was a member of Burns Lodge #147, Schriener Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, 40-year member of the Lions Club and a past district governor. He served his church as well, being a member for 60 years, and served as an elder for two terms.
He loved to travel with Phyllis and the family. They had visited 48 of the 50 states. He also enjoyed camping with friends, gardening, taking care of his yard and fishing trips.
