Ruby Ione Pope was born Feb. 2, 1922, the daughter of James Carl and Iva Irene Markwell Herdliska. She taught seven years in country schools near Marengo and North English before working at Kaiser Ag Chemical in Keswick as a bookkeeper. Ruby also did sewing and alterations for people. She was a member of the Webster United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School and belonged to the Church Circle. She was also a member of the True Blue Club.
Ruby was married to Alfred Pope on Nov. 27, 1946, at the Pleasant Grove Brethren Church near Millersburg. They made their home and farmed in the rural Webster community. She retired in 1998 and moved to her parents' home in North English.
She volunteered for over 20 years with the reading program at the English Valleys Elementary School and received several awards for her many years of volunteer work. Ruby enjoyed attending sporting activities with her family. She was an avid Chicago Cubs and Iowa State basketball fan.
Ruby moved to Sunnybrook Living Care Center in Fairfield on April 8, 2014. She died there Monday, May 5, 2014,
at the age of 92.
Ruby is survived by her son, Don (Reta) Pope of Fairfield; two granddaughters, Angie (Brandon) Coleman of Fairfield and Katie (Dave Belluchi) Pope; three great-grandchildren, Bailee, Emma and Jaxon Coleman; and a host of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother Don Herdliska; sister-in-law Jennie; and a sister, Joan Axmear Griffin.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 8, at Powell Funeral Home in North English with Pastor Luke Caster officiating.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 7, at the funeral home. As per Ruby's wishes, she will be cremated and her ashes will be buried at a later date.
