Betty Fisher Proe, 83, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Dec. 14, 2014, after a lengthy illness at Briarwood Health Care Center in Iowa City. A gathering of family and friends to celebrate Betty's life will be held from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 17, at Lensing Funeral Home. A time of remembrance and sharing will begin at 7 p.m. Private family burial will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Iowa City Hospice, The Salvation Army or to Essence of Life Hospice.

Betty was born on Nov. 5, 1931, in Reevesville, Ill., to James and Jesse Fisher. She graduated from Kankakee High School and then attended Grant School of Nursing in Chicago. She completed training to be a nurse anesthetist at Grace Hospital in Detroit, Mich. She served as a nurse anesthetist in the Army Nurse Corps. After her service in the Army, she worked at Tripler Army Medical Center and later at the VA Medical Center in Iowa City. She retired from the VA in 1993. Following retirement, she volunteered at ICare in Iowa City. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. Before her illness she resided at Legacy Point in Iowa City.
She is survived by four children, Celeste Proe of Minneapolis, Minn., Robert Proe of San Francisco, Calif., Kristin Coleman of Portland, Ore., and Jessica Proe of Solon; and two grandchildren, Bridget Coleman of Portland, Ore., and Paxton Oxley of Solon.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, three brothers and three brothers-in-law.
