Mary Louise Schreurs, 96, of Keota, died Monday, Jan. 19, 2015, at the Keota Health Care Center.
Mary was born Nov. 14, 1918, in Muscatine, to Mark A. and Lydia Mae (Hoopes) Conway. She graduated from St. Mathias High School in Muscatine, attended St. Ambrose College for two years and AIB in Davenport for one year. On June 27, 1945, she married Robert Schreurs in Muscatine. The couple moved to Keota in 1951, where Mary worked as a bookkeeper for several Keota businesses. Robert passed away in 1979 and Mary moved to Iowa City, where she was a house mother at the University of Iowa for nearly 20 years. Mary was a member of T.T.T., University Club in Iowa City, Holy Trinity Parish and the Altar and Rosary Society. She enjoyed family and friends, traveling and playing bridge. Mary was known for her quiet grace, strength, compassion and love.
Survivors include five children, Michael (Linda) Schreurs of Johnston, Karen (Delbert) Sypherd of Keota, Lindy Murphy of Sigourney, Susan Schreurs of Tacoma, Wash., and John (Julie) Schreurs of Des Moines; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert; and sons-in-law, Bud Murphy and John Loihl.
Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 22, at Holy Trinity Parish - St. Mary Catholic Church in Keota, with the Rev. Charles Fladung officiating. Burial will be at Holy Trinity Cemeteries - St. Mary Cemetery in Keota. Visitation will be from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 21, at Powell Funeral Home in Keota, where there will be a wake service at 7 p.m.
A memorial fund has been established for Holy Trinity Parish, Hospice Compassus and the Keota Veterans Memorial.
