Gerken, Joyce S.
Joyce S. Gerken, 73, of Waterloo, died Saturday, March 13, 2010, in Lady Lake, Fla. Services will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at St. Edward's Catholic Church, with entombment in Mount Olivet Mausoleum. Visitation will be from 4 to
8 p.m. Thursday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on Ridgeway, where there will be a Catholic Daughter's of America rosary at 4 p.m. and a vigil at 7 p.m. Visitation also for an hour before services at the church on Friday.
Joyce was born Aug. 6, 1936, in Faribault, Minn., daughter of Steven and Suzanne Kotewa Murphy. She married Daniel Gerken on Aug. 18, 1956, in Dubuque. Joyce graduated from St. Joseph Academy, Dubuque. She was a secretary at Columbus High School for many years.
She is survived by her husband; two sons, Paul (Cindy) Gerken of Cedar Rapids, and Dave (Sue Baune) Gerken of Apple Valley, Minn.; two daughters, Danette (Roger) Shook of Denver, and Marianne (Bob) Stalberger of Decorah; eight grandchildren, Mike, Jillyn and Nick Gerken, Katie and Darcey Shook and Jackson, Martin and Shelby Stalberger; two great-grandchildren, Sean Redmond and Malia Burton; two sisters, Jan Skram of Spirit Lake, and Maureen (Roger) Miller of La Motte.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Dennis Murphy; and a brother-in-law, Thomas Skram.
Memorials may be made to Columbus High School Scholarship Program or Susan B. Komen Breast Cancer Research.
