Iowa high school football roundup: Week 1 area scores, stats and more

High school football is back. Though there were a few Week 0 games last week and three more games Thursday night, most of the state kicked off the season Friday night.

Below is our complete area roundup, with scores, photos, stats and links to our coverage.

3A No. 1 Cedar Rapids Xavier 44, 1A No. 3 Iowa City Regina 7

Cedar Rapids Xavier continues to distance itself from a fellow parochial football power.

The defending Class 3A state champion Saints collided with 1A powerhouse Iowa City Regina for the fifth year in a row. After dropping the 2014 meeting, the Saints have posted four-consecutive victories in the series by bigger and bigger margins.

Xavier senior quarterback Quinn Schulte threw four touchdown passes and ran for two more scores as the top-ranked Saints drubbed No. 3 Regina, 44-7, in the season-opener for both schools Friday night at Regina High School.

4A No. 7 Iowa City West 28, 3A No. 4 North Scott 7

It was the best of both worlds for Iowa City West Coach Garrett Hartwig.

His Trojans, ranked No. 7 in Class 4A, broke open a close game in the second half and went on to a convincing 28-7 win over Class 3A No. 4 North Scott Friday night at Trojan Field.

3A No. 5 Solon 34, 2A No. 5 Mount Vernon 14

Play one-on-one against A.J. Coons with a short defender, and pay a hefty price.

Coons hauled in 11 receptions for 153 yards and scored three touchdowns as Class 3A fifth-ranked Solon extended its dominance of 2A No. 5 Mount Vernon, 34-14, in a non-district football game Friday night at Spartan Stadium.

Cedar Rapids Kennedy 34, Cedar Rapids Jefferson 0

The first was an early present. The second was just a bonus.

Cedar Rapids Kennedy made sure to capitalize on both first-quarter turnovers, parlaying them into a quick lead and a season-opening victory.

Defensive lineman Cam Jones returned a fumble 31 yards for a touchdown and Cairron Hendred's first of two scoring runs came after another Cedar Rapids Jefferson miscue, helping the Cougars roll to a 34-0 victory over the J-Hawks Friday night at Kingston Stadium.

Iowa City High 38, Iowa City Liberty 21

The first play from scrimmage came on offense and was a rush for 6 yards. The first completed pass was for 15 yards in the second quarter.

The first touchdown was a 1-yard plunge in the third quarter. The first varsity football win for the Iowa City Liberty Lightning?

That'll have to wait. But, by the looks of it, not a long time.

BGM 35, Lisbon 24

A new cast of characters had a tough opening act, but a rousing finish left room for plenty of optimism for the Lisbon football team.

BGM used all modes of transportation to rack up 246 yards in the first 15 minutes. The Lisbon defense dug in the rest of the way, but the early hole was too much, as the Bears won the Class A non-district matchup last night, 35-24.

'It's a young group,' Lisbon quarterback/defensive back Hagan Waters said. 'Very young. I think we're just getting our legs wet.'

The Lions, who graduated 77 percent of their tackles from a year ago, could not find an answer for the BGM attack early on. The Bears rolled up 245 first-half yards — 114 on the ground and 131 through the air.

The Lisbon defense held up well early as BGM tried to pound them up the middle. After a few pitches gashed the Lions wide, the middle softened up. Noah Beck found success lining up out of the shotgun in the wildcat, opening the scoring with a 15-yard burst.

The Lions were quick to respond. Will Bennett found a seam up the middle, breaking one defender on his way to a 75-yard score, closing the deficit at 7-6 with 5:33 to play in the first quarter.

The Bears went back to work. Quarterback Scott Tibbetts — the brother of slain University of Iowa student Mollie Tibbetts — pump-faked and went deep to Devon Maxfield for a 50-yard score.

The lead quickly ballooned to 28-6 as Tibbetts scored on a keeper from 9 yards out. Maxfield found himself all alone in the middle of the field as Tibbetts connected with him for a 60-yard touchdown with 8:55 to play in the half.

The Lions had chances to get back in it, but failed to convert a pair of first-and-goals from the BGM 5.

'We just have to move on, get better, and work on it,' Waters said. 'It was disappointing. We false-started. We shot ourselves in the foot.'

Marion 40, Washington (Iowa) 14

After Friday's game against Washington, the Marion football team did the Hokey-Pokey in the locker room.

It was fitting since they danced past the Demons for a 40-14 season-opening victory in Washington.

Marion quarterback Trevor Paulsen led the dance party, throwing three touchdowns on 18 of 30 passing for 222 yards.

'I was feeling good on our second drive and we capitalized there, so I had a feeling it was going to be a good night,' Paulsen said.

It was 14-0 with 3 minutes, 38 seconds left in the first quarter when CJ Anderson snared a pass in the right corner of the end zone.

'The line blocked great all night, especially on that play and CJ went up and got it,' Paulsen said.

A blocked punt led to a field goal for a 17-0 lead with under a minute remaining.

Luke Turner's touchdown got the Demons on the board with 7:37 left in the first half.

Connor Whalen took the ensuing kickoff back 90 yards for a 24-6 Indians lead.

Another Jaffer Murphy field goal with 1:22 before halftime made it 27-6 at intermission.

'It is not often you have 79,000 penalties and win 40-14,' Marion Coach Tim Lovell said. 'It was a highly-legislated game but it was pleasing to see we overcame that.'

The Indians actually had 13 penalties for 127 yards.

Dubuque Senior 7, Linn-Mar 6

he Lions lost a defensive battle in Dubuque when Austin Binning missed a PAT kick in the fourth quarter.

Linn-Mar's Marcus Orr scored on a 1-yard with 3:26 left to bring the Lions within 7-6 after a blocked punt.

'He just doesn't miss,' Senior Coach Dale Ploessl said. 'He's one of the best kickers in the state. I just told our guys 'sometimes the ball just bounces your way.''

Tommy Casey scored Senior's lone TD on a 1-yard run.

Decorah 24, 2A No. 8 Waukon 20

Drake Shelton rushed for 194 yards and a touchdown as the Vikings won at home.

Tanner Knutson scored twice and had an interception for Decorah.

Dawson Bauers rushed for 179 yards for Waukon, including 81- and 65-yard TD runs. He also caught a 51-yard pass for a TD.

3A No. 7 West Delaware 56, Dubuque Wahlert 20

Caleb Kehrli rushed for 234 yards and four touchdowns as the Hawks opened with a big win at home.

West Delaware totaled 533 yards and tied the school record with 30 first downs.

Kehrli scored on runs of 2, 4, 4 and 8 yards.

Quarterback Nick Casey added 95 yards on 13 carries and scored on a 15-yard run, and also passed for 157 yards, completing 11 of 21 passes with TD tosses to Joey Sunne and Gavin Soppe.

1A No. 4 West Branch 32, West Liberty 26

Tanner Lukavsky rushed for 174 yards and three scores to lead the Bears at home.

West Branch's defense limited the Comets to just 93 total yards, minus-10 on the ground. The majority of that came in the fourth quarter.

'Beating a 2A team tells us we have some talent,' West Branch Coach Butch Pedersen said. 'But we have a lot to work (to do) before next week. This was a good one to get under our belts.'

Anamosa 17, Maquoketa 6

Nathan Dietiker rushed for 116 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries as the Raiders opened with a win on the road.

After a scoreless first half, Maquoketa took a 6-0 lead on a 36-yard run by quarterback Isaac Crist.

Anamosa QB Nolan Mclean gave his team a 7-6 lead with a 35-yard TD run before Dietiker, who had three TDs called back by holding penalties, put the Raiders up 14-6 with an 8-yard scamper. Maverick Yjaden iced the win with a 25-yard field goal.

1A No. 6 Cascade 39, Monticello 34

The Cougars scored on their first four possessions of the game to take a 27-7 halftime lead, then held off a rally.

Cascade's Colby Holmes had 26 carries for 153 yards.

For Monticello, Lake Stahlberg rushed 25 times for 156 yards and scored four touchdowns.

An interception by Reid Rausch on the final play of the game at the Cascade 30 sealed it for the Cougars.

Alburnett 49, Vinton-Shellsburg 7

Matt Barnett rushed for 121 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries, and scored on a 90-yard kickoff return, as the Pirates won in Vinton.

Mason Wickman added 119 yards on 17 rushes and also scored twice. Holden Sevening and Hunter Caves also scored for Alburnett.

Western Dubuque 45, Clinton 7

Ben Bryant ran for 159 yards and two touchdowns in his varsity debut and Calvin Harris threw a pair of touchdown passes in his first start as the Bobcats rolled at home.

Harris completed 12 of 16 passes with one interception for the Bobcats. He also threw a 9-yard touchdown to Jeff Theisen.

'It felt really good. We've been working really hard and focusing and we had three big goals: to bring our offense energy, finish plays and pay attention to details,' Harris said. 'Obviously it showed tonight. We came out and played really well. It felt good as a team to get this win.'

Tripoli 14, Springville 12

Tripoli ran the opening kickoff back for a touchdown and scored on a two-pont conversion en route to a defensive 8-man battle in Springville.

Springville's Kyle Koppes completed 11 of 20 passes for 144 yards and a TD. Zach March caught seven passes for 55 yards and a TD.

North Linn 52, Starmont 0

Brennan Becker rushed for 220 yards and three TDs on just six carries as the Lynx won on the road.

Austin Miller passed for two TDs for North Linn.

8-P No. 5 Lone Tree 36, Montezuma 25

Bryce Houser ran 27 times for 189 yards and two touchdowns and intercepted a pass for the Lions.

Harmon Miller ran for two TDs and threw a TD pass to Avery Knock. Keegan Edwards lead the defense with eight tackles.
