Learn how to keep water clean

Thank you for Orlan Love's article about water quality funding that is going to help farmers implement clean water practices ('Funds to help implement water quality practices,” July 25).
This helps a little, but Iowa needs to do much more for clean water. There were 480 waterways on the 2012 impaired waters list, and Iowa needs to cut our nitrogen and phosphorous pollution by more than 40 percent to do our part in reducing hypoxia in the Gulf of Mexico. All Iowans need to do their part for clean water.
The League of Women Voters Linn County is sponsoring a family fun educational event 'Clean Streams & Waterways: Yes We Can” on Aug. 16 from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Thomas Park in Marion. This event will provide exhibits, demonstrations, watermelon, family fun and expert education.
On Sept. 13, at Indian Creek Nature Center, from 10 to 11:30 a.m., a panel will lead a conversation about steps every Iowan can take to improve our water. Both events are free and everyone is welcome.
