CEDAR RAPIDS — Cedar Rapids Washington's top boys' basketball player has decided to move on.
Hunter Strait said Monday night he has withdrawn from school and will transfer to Ankeny Centennial. He averaged 22 points in Wash's first two games this season, a win over New Hampton and a loss to Bettendorf.
The 6-foot-2 junior guard was in his third season as a starter for the Warriors and is considered a possible Division I college player.
'I wish Wash the best of luck, hope them the best,' Strait said late Monday night. 'I loved all the guys on my team. This was just the right decision for me moving forward.'
Strait's father and stepmother live in Ankeny, so it is believed he will become immediately eligible to play for the Jaguars (1-1). Otherwise, he would have to sit for 90 days before being allowed to play, per Iowa High School Athletic Association rules.
Centennial is coached by former Cedar Rapids Kennedy head coach Bob Fontana.
'It's his choice. I wish him the best. He is a great kid,' said Washington Coach Justin Decker. 'We've got to move on now.'
