Richard Lee Chapman, 66, of Marion, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, Feb. 9, 2018, at St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids. A parish vigil service will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 15, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Marion. The family will greet friends following the vigil service until 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 16, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Marion, officiated by Father Mark Kwenin. Committal service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Oakwood Cemetery in Monticello.
Richard was born Oct. 10, 1951, in Anamosa, the son of Joseph and Erma (Cooper) Chapman. He graduated from Maquoketa Valley High School in 1969 and attended Kirkwood Community College. Richard was united in marriage on Oct. 25, 1969, to Judith Von Spreecken, in Scotch Grove. He was employed with Rochester Armored Car Services as district manager for upper Iowa for 29 years, retiring on Dec. 31, 2017. Richard was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion and Eagles Club Aerie No. 695 of Iowa City. He was a practical joker and loved his flowers, fishing, traveling and going on trips. Richard was a loyal and devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. He loved his family more than anything and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife of 48½ years, Judith Chapman of Marion; daughter, Cynthia (Randy) Barber of Cedar Rapids; son, Courtland (Amy) Chapman of Garrison; seven grandchildren, Sarah Hayes, Kelsey Morris, TJ Morris, Zachery Morris, Lauren Chapman, Alexandria Chapman and Cordell Sparks; two great-grandchildren, Avolynn Hayes and Carver Hayes; mother-in-law, Helen Blair of Marion; two sisters-in-law, Carol (Chuck) Gray of Eveleth, Minn., and Nancy (Darrell) Busch of Marion; many nieces and nephews; and two special beloved dogs, Bandit and Olaf.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Larry J. Chapman.
Memorials in Richard's memory may be directed to the family and will be designated later.
