Iowa CB Amari Spievey vs. Ohio State WR DeVier Posey
Amari Spievey (jr.)
Dimensions - 6-0, 190
Position - Right cornerback
Back story - Amari Spievey's name is on the list.
ESPN draft persona Mel Kiper has the 6-1, 19-pounder No. 4 on his list of junior cornerbacks. Spievey earned second-team all-Big Ten last season. This season, he has two interceptions and seven pass breakups. Coming off the field against Iowa State, when Iowa picked off five Cyclones passes, I joked with him, where's your's? He kinda snapped, hey, they're not throwing my way.
Teams have challenged Spievey the last couple weeks. Indiana QB Ben Chappell tried for two TDs on him, but both receptions were made out of bounds. Northwestern went his way a few times, too. Still, when opposing offenses gameplan Iowa, Spievey is not the first place they look.
So, his defensive back numbers don't blow you away. What does are his "football player" numbers. He's tied for seventh on the team with 47 tackles. Last season, he had 66. He's fearless in run support and is one of the best "football" players on the team.
DeVier Posey (so.)
Dimensions - 6-3, 205 pounds
Position - Wide receiver
Back story - The sophomore from Cincinnati is one of the Big Ten's biggest playmakers. He has 45 catches for 672 yards and seven touchdowns. Six of his TDs have been 23 yards or longer and three have gone 57 yards or longer, including a 62-yarder in last week's victory at Penn State.
Posey is tied for the league lead in touchdown receptions and ranks fifth in receiving yards (67.2 yards a game). Last fall behind stars Brian Robiskie and Brian Hartline, Posey managed just 11 receptions.
"He wants to be good," Buckeyes head coach Jim Tressel said. "He'd be the first to tell you he's a long way from where he'd like to be, but he's working to progress and he has come up with some big catches. We need him to be a guy that when his number is called, he makes the play."
Judges?
They should see each other. Maybe not every play, but Posey's 62-yarder last week -- it was effortless on both ends, by the way -- came on the boundary side, where Spievey plays.
I don't know. This is about as good as it gets in the Big Ten. All it takes is one for Posey to make his presence felt.
