LuCean Madonna Fangman was born March 3, 1927, in Watauga, S.D., the eldest child of Joseph and Orpha Staudenraus Schmit. At the age of 7, her family moved from Watauga to Everett, Wash., where they lived for one year. They then returned to South Dakota for a short period and then came back to Iowa to live near her grandparents. They moved several times before settling south of Monti in March 1942. She graduated from Coggon High School in 1945. On Oct. 9, 1948, LuCean was married to Daniel Fangman at St. Patrick's Church in Monti. LuCean and Dan settled on a farm east of Monti, where they lived their entire lives together.
LuCean spent her life on the farm doing anything that needed to be done and was locally known for her chickens and eggs. The meals she fixed for the harvesting crews were legends on their own and looked forward to by those who had the pleasure of helping on the farm. She also opened her home to countless relatives, family and friends when they needed a place to stay. She was always putting the needs of others before her own. She was a devoted member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Monti.
LuCean was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel; sons, Paul and Gary; son-in-law, Dennis Rickels; and brother, Lloyd.
She is survived by 10 children, Marge (Bob) of Wheaton, Ill., Roger (Sue) of Rowley, Liz Rickels-Ster of Center Point, Sheila (daughter-in-law) of Independence, Barb (Dennis) Sullivan of Winthrop, Mark of Independence, Deb (Nick) Crawford of Winthrop, Phil (Threasa) of Masonville, Doug of Masonville, Cathy Banks of Center Point and Greg (Christine) of Independence; 24 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; five siblings, Robert Schmit of North Pole, Alaska, Lorraine Schmit of Carmel, Calif., J'Neane Coffman of Clifton, Va., Janet (Les) Lammers of Estherville and Leo (Kaye) Schmit of Winthrop; and sister-in-law, Rosemary Schmit of Salisbury, Mo.
