Morton, Donald V.
Donald V. Morton, 92, died Tuesday, June 11, 2013, at St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids. Funeral Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 15, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Cedar Rapids, with Pastors Phil Jorgensen and Lynn L'Abbe officiating. Burial, with military honors: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 14, at the church. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo, is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be contributed to Our Savior's Lutheran Church or Boy Scout Camp Waubeek.
Donald is survived by his wife, Ruth; two sons, Douglas (Nancy) of Brookings, S.D., and Thomas (Pat) of Centennial, Colo.; a daughter, Julieanne Gentz (Brian) of Ottumwa; 12 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Charles; a sister, Mary Ethel Burrack; and a granddaughter, Rachel Denny.
Donald Vaughn Morton was born Feb. 12, 1921, in Plankinton, S.D., the son of Charles Milan Morton and Lena Ethel Vaughn Morton. He graduated from Hopkinton High School, Hopkinton, Iowa and attended Lenox College in Hopkinton and Coe College in Cedar Rapids. He served in the U.S. Navy, stationed in the Philippines and the South Pacific, during World War II. Donald married Ruth Lange on May 23, 1948, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Monticello. The couple had just celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.
Donald worked for Quaker Oats, drove taxi for several years, and then worked at Allis-Chalmers for 15 years. Most recently he was employed as an industrial specialist with the Defense Contract Administrative office from 1968-1994, retiring from there.
Donald was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids, where he was a past Sunday school superintendent, church treasurer, past church council president, an elder, and also sang in the choir. He was a Boy Scout leader for Troop 39 and was a recipient of the Lamb Award, and was a vigil honor member of Order of the Arrow. Donald was a member of the American Legion.
