Courtney, Don
Don Courtney, 83, of Cedar Rapids, died Saturday, Oct. 31, 2009, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha, of lung cancer. Services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. William Harnish. Military honors by American Legion Post No. 727.
Survivors include his daughter, Connie Murphy of Cedar Rapids; granddaughter, Deb (Jeremy) Taylor of Marion; brother, William Courtney of Clear Lake, Iowa; sister, Virginia VanDyke of Willowbrook, Ill.; stepdaughter, Judy Strait; stepson, Craig Strait; stepgranddaughter, Tracy Powell; stepgrandson, Dennis Strait, all of Cedar Rapids; and several other stepgrandchildren.
Also surviving are his good friends, Phil and Jan Olivier; co-workers, Terry Dawson, John Kirchoff and Al Keller; and his dog and best friend, Bud.
Don was born Sept. 22, 1926, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Thomas and Lulu Le Huch Courtney. Don served with the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Air Force. He worked for D&S Glass Co. and then in 1975, he became a city bus driver. He was past president of the Local 638 ATU Bus Driver's Union. He retired in 2003. In 1976, he married Arlene Strait. She died in 1995.
He enjoyed watching car racing and spending time with his family and friends. Don will be missed by all who knew him.
