Eulberg, Philip Ignatius
Philip Ignatius Eulberg, 82, of Garnavillo, died Saturday, Sept. 22, 2012, at the Guttenberg Care Center.
He was born Feb. 1, 1930, in Garnavillo, the eight of 10 children of Henry John and Elsie Margaret (Bittner) Eulberg. Philip attended St. Joseph's Catholic School from first through 10th grade and Garnavillo Public School to complete high school. Phil worked at Meuser Lumber Company, Garnavillo, which was managed by his father. Phil joined the Air Force in January 1949 and served until September 1952, during the Korean conflict. He completed basic training at Shepherd Air Force Base, Wichita Falls, Texas and was stationed at Edwards Air Force Base, Muroc, Calif. and Carswell Air Force Base, Fort Worth, Texas. He worked in personnel and achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant.
Phil returned to Garnavillo to work again at Meuser Lumber Co. He became manager following his father's retirement. Of his experience in the lumber business, he enjoyed designing buildings and homes. On Aug. 12, 1961, Philip was married to Rita Alice Henry at Lycurgus Catholic Church in rural Waukon, Iowa. Philip changed jobs in 1961 to become assistant cashier at the Garnavillo Savings Bank in October and later cashier and vice president. He also studied for and received his insurance agent's certification and worked for the Norris Kuenzel Agency.
He had held various public positions, such as council member, mayor and zoning board member. He had participated in several civic clubs and organizations, such as Lions Club, Boy Scouts and the American Legion. Family activities and vacations were memorable times. Camping was a great favorite; pack up the camping trailer and away for a trip, the state fair, Yellowstone or a short weekend. Fishing, deer hunting, music and springtime mushroom hunting were special times. Philip and Rita had been long time members of St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 51 years, Rita; four children, Virginia Eulberg of Boyden, Gregory Eulberg of Marion, Sally Eulberg of Dubuque and Nancy Williams of Omaha, Neb.; one brother, John “Jack” Eulberg of Garnavillo; and many other relatives and friends.
Philip was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Anita Keppler, S.R. Jean Marie Eulberg and Ruth Hoeger; and five brothers, Richard, Don, Bill, Frank and Roy Eulberg.
Arrangements are being handled by Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 001 S. Industrial Park Rd., Garnavillo, Iowa, where the family will receive friends from 2 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25, and one hour before service Wednesday at church. Funeral service will be at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Garnavillo, at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, the Rev. Marvin Bries and the Rev. Bernard Grady will be officiating. Interment will be at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Garnavillo.
