MCGREGOR - A community fund has been established for the city of McGregor after an EF-1 tornado touched down in its downtown Wednesday evening.
The Clayton County Community Foundation partnered with the city to establish the Restore McGregor 2017 Tornado Fund.
The tornado, with wind speeds reaching 110 mph at the height of the storm, moved through the town of 900 people fairly quickly. However, many residents were left without power and with damage to vehicles and buildings.
Gov. Kim Reynolds announced Thursday a disaster proclamation for Clayton County, where McGregor is located, along with Allamakee, Fayette and Winneshiek in response to Wednesday's severe weather.
Acting Lt. Gov. Adam Gregg and other state officials visited McGregor on Friday to tour the storm damage.
Those interested in making a tax-exempt donation to the fund can mail their checks to the Restore McGregor 2017 Tornado Fund, c/o Central State Bank, 205 Edgar St., Marquette, Iowa. Donations also can be made online at www.dbqfoundation.org/mcgregor.
