CLARENCE – Two people were hurt in an all-terrain vehicle crash Monday night in Cedar County.
The ATV went out of control around 9:30 p.m. along a curve on Quincy Avenue, a gravel road just off County Road X64 north of Clarence, authorities said. Two riders were thrown from the ATV as rolled and stopped in the middle of the road.
Scott A. Dierks, 30, of Clarence, suffered serious head injuries in the crash, according to the Iowa State Patrol. An air ambulance flew him to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
Dierks was listed in critical condition in the surgical intensive care unit Tuesday afternoon, according to Iowa State Patrol Sgt. David Shinker.
A passenger on the ATV, Daniel J. Mohr, 26, of Clarence, had minor injuries from the wreck. An investigation was continuing.
Just two months ago, two teenagers died after they were thrown from their ATVs on a gravel road southwest of Clarence. Jayce Droll, 17, of Stanwood, and Aaron Lawrence, 16, of Mechanicsville, died from their injuries in the April 1 crash.
Authorities said Droll lost control of a three-wheel ATV, and Lawrence, who was following him in a four-wheel ATV, also lost control as he tried to avoid the initial accident.
