Iowa City officials said on Aug. 26 they are planning more strict enforcement of the city's "meter feeding" regulations at downtown parking meters.
Here's the news release from the city of Iowa City:
Beginning on September 1, 2011, the City of Iowa City will begin more strict enforcement of the existing regulations addressing "meter feeding" for vehicles parked in parking meters in downtown Iowa City between the hours of 8am - 5pm, Monday - Saturday.Per Iowa City Code, 9-5-5: PROHIBITED ACTS AND CONDITIONS:It shall be unlawful and a violation of the provisions of this chapter for any driver or owner to:A. Parking Overtime: Cause, allow or permit any vehicle to be parked overtime or beyond the prescribed time period. The enforcement of overtime parking or "meter feeding" is intended to promote the turnover of parking spaces for those wishing to conduct short term business downtown. The term of use for the parking space is indicated on each parking meter, customers who require longer term parking are encouraged to park in one of the five downtown area parking ramps. The parking term as posted on the meter is defined as the maximum amount of time that the space can be occupied, ranging from 30 minutes to 10 hours. Vehicles occupying metered parking spaces beyond the posted parking term will be considered as parking overtime, and may be issued citations. Citations can be issued even if the customer has deposited funds in the meter once the stated time limit has been reached.
