Casino job helped pay way through college

I am directing this letter to those of you who are undecided regarding the new casino venue. Unlike some of the Just Say No group, I come from the community and believe the outside influence should be ignored. I am not one of the casino investors.
Having practiced medicine in Cedar Rapids for more than 35 years, few know me as Denny Boatman, blackjack dealer. That's right! To pay my way through college I had many jobs. However, one of the best jobs was dealing blackjack at the Sands Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.
Since then, I have enjoyed working in, and for, a diverse number of entities, from health care, to education, to helping non-profits. Through all of that I still have fond memories of the experiences I had in the casino. I enjoyed the many people who I witnessed having a very entertaining time placing some friendly wagers. I even helped Lucille Ball win a few dollars.
My point is a rather simple one. Every single job is important is to the person holding it. It gave me the opportunity to enjoy a career in medicine, which allowed me to work with thousands of Linn County residents. We will never know what future doctor the new casino might help through college, however, I hope my story encourages you to vote yes on Tuesday.
