Atkinson, Jackie 'Jack' Lee
Jackie “Jack” Lee Atkinson, 68, of Edgewood, died at Lincolnwood Assisted Living in Edgewood on Wednesday, June 1, 2011. Funeral services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 4, at St. Mark's Catholic Church, Edgewood, with the Rev. Stephen Lundgren as celebrant. Inurnment, with military rites, will be at a later date at St. Mark's Catholic Cemetery, Edgewood. Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. today at Leonard-Muller Funeral home in Edgewood, with a 4 p.m. rosary. Friends may also call one hour before services Saturday at the church.
Jack was born April 12, 1943, in Manchester, to Francis “Si” and Velma (Eggiman) Atkinson. He was raised and educated in the Edgewood area, graduating from Edgewood High School in 1961. Jack served honorably in the United States Army from 1961 through 1964.
Jack was united in marriage to Ruth Vorwald on July 9, 1963. Five children were born to this union. They later divorced. Over the years, Jack worked for Rodas Chevrolet, Swales Concrete, Seedorff Masonry and Dave Atkinson Repair. In 1983, he took over farming the family farm.
Jack loved being with his family and grandchildren. He enjoyed fishing trips and hunting with family and friends. He also enjoyed watching westerns.
Jack is survived by five children, Brian (Melissa) Atkinson of Center Point, Kevin (Dawn) Atkinson of Shellsburg, Craig (Kari) Atkinson of Central City, Lisa (Chad) Barnhart of Colesburg, and Daryl Atkinson of Edgewood; eight grandchildren, Ashley Atkinson, Garrett Atkinson, Jordyn Atkinson, Miranda Barnhart, Macey Barnhart, Beau Atkinson, Madison Atkinson and Aubree Atkinson; his mother, Velma Atkinson of Edgewood; one brother, David (Beverly) Atkinson of Edgewood; one sister, Joan Atkinson of Cedar Rapids; and several nieces and nephews.
Jack was preceded in death by his father, and a nephew, Damian Atkinson.
