Donald E. "Tucker" Slade, 79, of Coralville, died Saturday, Sept. 3, 2016, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
A funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service, where military rites will be rendered following the service. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. before the service on Friday. Memorials in Tucker's name may be directed to the Special Olympics or the Coralville American Legion. Donald Earl Slade was born Jan. 16, 1937, in Iowa City, Iowa, son of George H. and Edith (Teague) Slade. He graduated from U High with the class of '55 and went on to serve in the U.S. Army from 1959 to 1962, and a few years later, on May 1, 1965, married Anita Enderle in West Liberty. He and Anita moved to Coralville after marriage, where they raised their family and still reside today. He worked for many years as a computer programmer, for both Westinghouse and Seaburg & Smith, until retiring in 1999.
In his younger years, Tucker was known in the area for his fast-pitch pitching, pitching for many local teams. He also enjoyed bowling, playing cards, his trips to the casino and was a very loyal Cubs and Hawkeye fan. Most of all, Tucker loved being Grandpa!
Tucker also had been a longtime member and active part of the Coralville American Legion for many years.
His family includes his wife, Anita; children, Deanna Dicken (Brandon), Tricia Slade (Kris Duncan) and Tony Slade (Camille); grandchildren, Keily Slade, Kelsey Christiaanson and Jack, Cameron, Anthony and Lewis Slade; great-grandchildren, Trey Christiaanson and Paige Black; and his siblings, Richard, Bob, Mike and David Slade and Shirley Slade Lesher.
He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Kenny, Russell, Raymond, Danny and Billy; and his nephew, Steve.
